In the so-called ’summer of love’, Kings Cross was as
much a magnet for long-haired hippies as it was for US servicemen on
leave from Vietnam.
Photographers Rennie Ellis and Wesley Stacey spent six
months in 1970—71 capturing the sights, sounds and pulsating rhythms of
Sydney's infamous red-light district: from drag queens to avant-garde
artists, celebrities and local characters. This exhibition is a
fascinating portrait of life 'up the Cross' at a unique moment in time.

Exhibition: Painting The Rocks: the loss of Old Sydney
Dates: Saturday 7 August — Sunday 28 November, 2010
Against the backdrop of slum clearances, wharf rebuilding
and debates about working-class living conditions, a group of artists set out to
capture ‘Old Sydney’ before it disappeared in the city’s transition to a modern metropolis.
The first decades of the 20th century saw countless buildings from our colonial past
torn down and whole streets disappear as Sydneysiders embraced the march of progress.
Remarkably, in the midst of this change a conservation movement began to arise.
Giving voice to the people who worked and lived in The Rocks, this exhibition places
the often romantic and sentimental 1902 artists’ paintings alongside the stark realities
of government-commissioned photography, inspection reports and remodelling plans.

Exhibition: Sydney's Italian Fruit Shops
Open: 23 May to 8 August 2010
Venue: Customs House,Library & Exhibition Lounge Level, 1
Sydney’s Italian Fruit Shops -The Original Green Grocer - photographic exhibition
Reminisce and celebrate the cultural and historic contribution made by Italian fruiterers
to Sydney’s social history when Co.As.It. (Italian Association of Assistance), in
collaboration with the Australian Centre for Public History (ACPH) at the University of Technology,
Sydney, present this photographic exhibition.
Photographs of smiling fruiterer families eager to present a picture of respectability,
family unity and migrant success, belie the 18-hour days, physical labour, and social
sacrifices that had to be made for their ‘shop full of dreams’ to succeed. These shops
changed Australian eating habits and made a tangible impact on the cultural landscape
of our streets and suburbs.
This exhibition extracts the cultural significance of the Italian fruit shops in Sydney
from the turn of the twentieth century, and will leave a lasting record and legacy for
present and future generations.
